Roughneck is an all around term for someone who works on either an off shore or a land oil rig. In the UK oil industry (1970s onwards), the term roughneck was specifically for the moderately skilled people who worked on the drill floor of a drilling rig, actually handling the specialised equipment for drilling, pressure control, etc. In practice, these workers ranged from unskilled to highly skilled, depending subjectively on the individual worker's aptitude and experience. By contrast, a roustabout would perform more general labor, such as loading and unloading cargo from crane baskets, and being assistants to the welder, mechanic, electrician and other skilled workers. Usage in America and globally by USA-headquartered drilling contractors was similar even earlier, and the terms had spread to the rest of the world at least by the mid-1990s. Most people have come to interpret the meaning as a cruel and brutish fellow, an uncouth or thuggish blue-collar person, a bully, tough, hooligan, ruffian, rowdy, yob, yobo, yobbo-not necessarily uncouth but loutish.
My definition of a Roughneck is someone who works hard, plays hard and don't take no crap from nobody.
